The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Executive Director Craig Coogan discusses their work as performers and cultural ambassadors – in the US and abroad – to inspire change and celebrate difference.
Craig Coogan joined the BGMC as Executive Director in October 2012. He is an expert in developing strategies and programs to help LGBTQA and other nonprofit organizations achieve their operational and artistic goals. A graduate of Syracuse University, he brings experience in both the for-profit and non-profit arenas.
Mr. Coogan previously served as Executive Director for One Voice Mixed Chorus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a founding board member and treasurer for ten years of the acclaimed women’s choral group Vox Femina Los Angeles. He has also produced independent films, award-winning documentaries, and acclaimed original plays that tell the LGBTQA experience. To learn more visit craigcoogan.com.

I had the pleasure of singing with the Boston Gay Mens Chorus for a short time. They are a large assembly of the most diverse men I have ever seen. At one point a national chain branch had done something quite offensive to people of color. That weekend the chorus was to avail ourselves of their services. I expressed my concern and acknowledged that it was too late at this point to make other arrangements but I would still be there and would provide for myself. To my surprise, the chorus was able to make other arrangements that a chorus member privately paid for himself and several chorus members showed up early and made it happen. When I expressed my deep appreciation, they made it clear that they are all one. That is their message. That is their way for the chorus, for our country, for the world. And they go to great lengths to disseminate that message and they make damn sure to sing out loud and clear and without reservation for anyone who needs to hear it no matter who you are or where you are.
