The City of New Bedford wanted to increase its high school graduation rates. As their response, New Bedford Whaling Museum launched the High School Apprenticeship Program, which provides resources and support to students that deepen community engagement and cultivate college and career readiness. Director of Apprentices and Interns Christina Turner and then Vice President of Education and Programs Sarah Rose share how the apprenticeship program has grown into a nationally-recognized model for creative youth development – with a 100% graduation rate for its participants.
Christina Turner is the Director of Apprentices and Interns at the New Bedford Whaling Museum where she directs the Museum’s High School Apprenticeship Program which earned the 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award and the 2018 American Alliance of Museum Education Committee’s Excellence in Programming Award. In this role, she leads all recruiting and community engagement efforts and designs, implements, and evaluates all aspects of the program’s curriculum, daily activities, and operations.
Christina has an extensive background in leading dynamic youth development programs, building collaborative community partnerships, and supporting educational initiatives in historically marginalized communities. She currently serves on the advisory committee for Eduleaders of Color Rhode Island, an initiative focused on education and working to unite, support and empower people of color. Christina earned her B.A. from Boston University and a Master in Public Administration from Baruch College as part of the National Urban Fellows Program.
Sarah Rose is the Deputy Director of Museum Education and Outreach at Plimoth Plantation. In her role she is responsible for advancing the Museum’s overall educational strategy through the creation and implementation of a strong set of mission-focused programs for all audience levels from the general public to the academic community. Prior to this position, Ms. Rose served as Vice President of Education and Programs at the New Bedford Whaling Museum where she oversaw the museum’s educational efforts including the High School Apprenticeship Program. Ms. Rose earned a BA from Wheaton College, a MBA from New York University and a MAT from Simmons College.
