Lecolion Washington, CEO and Executive Director of the Community Music Center of Boston, discusses some of the barriers to seeing more diversity in symphony orchestras across America, what systemic change takes, and how to create an organizational culture that is success-based, not deficit-based.
Lecolion Washington, CEO/Executive Director of the Community Music Center of Boston. M.M. Manhattan School of Music, B.M. University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Washington has established himself as a leader for the next generation of arts entrepreneurs, and he has been a staunch advocate for the relevance of music as an agent for social change.
Prior to beginning his tenure at Community Music Center of Boston, Mr. Washington was the Co-Founder/Executive Director of the PRIZM Ensemble in Memphis, an organization whose mission is to build a diverse community through chamber music education, youth development, and performance. PRIZM has community engagement and youth development programs such as the OMusic Project (a music program in a neighborhood in Memphis called Orange Mound, the first African-American neighborhood to be built by African Americans), the PRIZM in the Schools Program, and the PRIZM International Chamber Music Festival. In 2018, he was named one of Musical America’s “Professionals of the Year”, and served as a lead panelist at the Chamber Music America conference following a keynote address by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
